Lady Eagles Win Exhibition Against Oklahoma Flyers

Denton (11/4/01) - The North Texas women’s basketball team got its first look of the year at outside competition on Sunday, defeating the Oklahoma Flyers, 85-82, in the first of two exhibition games on the Lady Eagles 2001 schedule.

Leading 82-79 with 1:27 remaining in the game, senior forward Jalie Mitchell (Duncanville, Tex.) drained two free throws to push the North Texas advantage to 84-79. With just three seconds left on the clock, former Univ. of Oklahoma standout Sunny Hardeman hit a three-pointer to bring the Flyers within two points of the Lady Eagles. The Flyers immediately fouled on the inbounds and sent senior Shannan Stephenson (Winchester, Tenn.) to the charity stripe. Stephenson made one of her two free throws, but it didn’t matter as the Flyers were unable to get off a final shot.

North Texas’ Angel Lewis (Jr.; F; Cedar Hill, Tex.) made a lay-up with 19 seconds left in the first half to break a 38-38 tie and give the Lady Eagles a lead they would not relenquish for the remainder of the game. The first half saw six lead changes and six ties, but the Lady Eagles finished the first 20 minutes of action with a 42-38 advantage.

Eleven different North Texas players saw at least eight minutes of action in the game and all of them had at least one point and one rebound. Mitchell led the Lady Eagles with 21 points in 26 minutes of action, but three other North Texas players registered double-figure points. Stephenson finished the game with 17, Lewis had 11 and Nicole Thomas (Sr.; G; Dallas, Tex.) scored 10.

The Lady Eagles out-rebounded the Flyers, 35-34, and shot 47 percent from the floor in comparison to the Flyers 39 percent. The Flyers turned the ball over 28 times, while North Texas only gave the ball away 21 times. North Texas also had more steals than the Flyers at 14-6.
