DENTON, Texas (11/3/10) -Jeanee' Thompson scored the game-winning basket to give TWU a 71-69 exhibition victory against the North Texas women's basketball team on Wednesday night at the Super Pit.
The Pioneers defeated the Mean Green in exhibition play for the second straight year.
TWU led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but the Mean Green fought back, and the two teams went back and forth in the second half. The second half featured five ties and neither team led by more than three points in the final five minutes.
Jasmine Godbolt led the way for the Mean Green with 20 points. The 20 points would be a career high for Godbolt in a regular season game. Newcomer Ash'Lynne Evans posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes of work. Alyssa Hankins added 16 points in her debut.
Kayla Weaver led TWU with 19 points.
Weaver and Thompson scored 10 of TWU's last 13 points to lead TWU to victory. Thompson scored only five points in the game but hit two key baskets in the last five minutes. She tied the game at 59-59 with a free throw, and Weaver added two more free throws to give TWU a 61-59 lead at 4:28.
North Texas scored the next six points, but Weaver responded with two baskets to put TWU back ahead, 64-63 at 2:49. The Mean Green did not give up, answering with two scores that put NT back in the lead. Brooke Shepherd tied the game for TWU with a three-pointer, 68-68.
Evans hit one of two free throws after being fouled, giving North Texas a one-point lead, 69-68, with 49 seconds left on the clock. Jessica Hanna found Thompson under the basket on TWU's next possession to put the Pioneers up for good. Weaver sealed the win with a free throw after the Mean Green turned over the ball twice.
North Texas shot 38 percent from the field and made 13 of 25 shots from the free-throw line. TWU shot 44 percent from the field and scored 23 points from the charity stripe.
The Mean Green started off slow and did not take its first lead until the 2:16 mark in the first half. Godbolt made two free throws to give North Texas its first lead, 32-31. Hankins would give the Mean Green its second lead, 35-33, with a three-pointer.Hankins made a jumper with eight seconds left in the first half, giving North Texas a 37-36 lead at intermission.
North Texas opens the season on Friday, Nov. 13 against Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m.
