Oct. 20, 2016

DENTON -- The fifth annual Mean Green Basketball Madness introduced fans to the 2016-17 teams at the Super Pit Thursday evening. Both coaches got a chance to showcase their new teams as Mean Green players scrimmaged for the first time this season.

The women's team was introduced first, as they ran a Black vs. Green scrimmage for 15 minutes. Second year head coach Jalie Mitchell spoke to the crowd about showing support for the team and to make The Super Pit one of the toughest places to play this season.

The Green team came away with a close 35-30 victory, including a three-pointer at the buzzer by senior guard Kelsey Criner. Redshirt sophomore Terriell Bradley led the green team with 11 points and classmate Grace Goodhart added 10 points. Newcomer Micayla Buckner scored 10 points for the black team and senior guard Candice Adams chipped in 10 points.

The veteran men's team was introduced to the fans before competing in a 15 minute scrimmage. Head coach Tony Benford greeted the fans with a speech about how fun this team will be to watch and to make sure to come back this season. The black team came away with a lopsided 43-to-29 victory as three players came away with eight points apiece in sophomore Rickey Brice Jr., classmate Allante Holston and senior Derail Green. Freshman A.J. Lawson scored eight points for the green team and junior Jeremy Combs added seven points.

The three-point contest went to a similar all-star game format as four competitors from each team took 15 shots (green & white money ball worth three points). Goodhart won the women’s event with 14 points. Senior Keith Frazier finished with 13 points taking home the men’s title. Goodhard defeated Frazier 9-to-6 in the ultimate championship.

In the final event of the evening, freshman Ryan Woolridge, Lawson, junior Shane Temara and sophomore Ja’Michael Brown showed off their dunk skills for the crowd. In the end, Temara won the crowd vote with a couple of highlight dunks, including jumping over teammate Jacob Gross and an off the glass throw down.

Both teams will open the season on Friday, Nov. 11 with the women starting in the preseason WNIT at Little Rock at 6:30 p.m. and the men's team hosting Sul Ross State at 7 p.m.
