DENTON, Texas (10/17/08) The wait is over and basketball season has arrived. Tonight marks the first practice for the North Texas women’s basketball team under new head coach Shanice Stephens. The Mean Green returns a host of letterwinners from last year including preseason first-team all-conference forward Amber Jackson and second-team all-conference player guard Brittney James.
“It’s an exciting time for Mean Green women’s basketball. We’ve anxiously waited for this day to truly begin our new era,” said coach Shanice Stephens. “The individual accolades from the Sun Belt Conference were very positive and no we are ready to begin our journey to take the conference by storm”.
Jackson enters the season 83 points away from becoming just the 11th player in school history to score 1,000 points for her career.
James was tabbed to the preseason second team as she is coming off the most prolific offensive season by a North Texas sophomore since the 1996-97 season. James had 38 3-pointers, 57 steals, and was the only player to start all 32 games last season for North Texas.
The Mean Green was picked to finish third in the Sun Belt Conference West Division and was one of only three teams to have two players named to the first or second team all-conference squad.
North Texas begins the exhibition season on November 11 against TWU and the regular season on November 17 at Marshall.
