DENTON, Texas - The 2009-10 North Texas women's basketball schedule is out and the Mean Green is facing a potent lineup of the nation's top teams in year two of the Shanice Stephens era. Highlighting the schedule are battles with three Big 12 opponents and home games against SMU and George Washington. North Texas faces five teams that advanced to post-season play last season.
"Challenging is a perfect descriptive for our 2009-2010 schedule," said coach Stephens. "It's loaded with great competition and the preseason is stacked with opponents that will help prepare our team for the strong Sun Belt conference. I'm excited to face three Big 12 opponents in Texas A&M, Texas and Missouri."
The Mean Green starts the year out on the road against Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 14. Three days later it's the home opener as the Mean Green battles George Washington for the first time in school history. North Texas returns to the road to face Texas on Nov. 20 before two straight home games against UMKC and UTPA.
SMU visits the Super Pit on December 2 as the two rivals will meet for the 40th time in series history. North Texas has back-to-back road games at Houston and Texas A&M on Dec. 5 and Dec. 8 before returning home to begin Sun Belt Conference play on December 15 against ULM.
The final non-conference game of the season is on December 28 as North Texas travels to Missouri to face the Tigers for the first time in over 22 years.
"George Washington and SMU will be strong programs that we will battle in the Super Pit," said Stephens. "With ten new faces on the court, I'm anxious to start preparing for a successful season and for our fans to become familiar with our new student-athletes as well as continue to support our returners. This year has the potential to be a storybook season for the Mean Green women's basketball team."
The Mean Green has one tournament this season as they will play in the UAB Thanksgiving Classic where they will face Samford and UAB.
The Sun Belt schedule has the Mean Green face West Division champion UALR on New Year's Eve in Little Rock. North Texas gets a crack at defending conference champion Middle Tennessee on Jan. 30 on the road in Murfreesboro.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is in Hot Springs once again and takes place from March 6-9.
