DENTON, Texas (9/12/12) - North Texas women's basketball has released the schedule for the 2012-13 season, which will be the first for North Texas head coach Mike Petersen.
"It is always exciting when the schedule is released for the upcoming season because it reminds you about the challenges and opportunities that are ahead," said Petersen. "I always get a little burst of energy this time of year as we make plans for the season ahead."
The schedule features 13 home games, including marquee games against SMU, Alabama, Oklahoma and Tulane.
The Mean Green opens the season against Texas State on Nov. 12, which is the first of nine non-conference games.
"I like our non-conference schedule because it will be very challenging," said Petersen. "By the time we get to the Sun Belt Conference games, we will be well-tested and should have a great idea about the strengths and weaknesses of our team."
The following two games are on the road against cross-town rival SMU and Alabama. The Mean Green and Mustangs have faced off against one another in each season since the North Texas' women's basketball program was introduced for the 1976-77 season.
After a tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., where North Texas will play host New Mexico and either Georgia or St. Bonaventure, the Mean Green come home for games against Pac-12 opponent Arizona before opening Sun Belt Conference play against Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Mean Green then head to Norman, Okla., to take on the Sooners for the first time in five years. Oklahoma, which lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament, beat 2011 NCAA champion Texas A&M at home last season.
Following a matchup against WNIT-qualifier Tulane, North Texas will reignite SBC conference play on the road with games against Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. Overall, the Mean Green is scheduled to play 20 Sun Belt Conference regular-season games, which will set a new school record.
The first game of the 2013 calendar year is at home on Jan. 2 against Troy, whom North Texas defeated in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament last season. A week later, the Mean Green travels to Little Rock, Ark., to face defending conference-champion UALR.
North Texas will host Senior Day on Feb. 27 against Arkansas State in the final game of the regular season.
The Sun Belt Conference tournament will be held in Hot Springs, Ark., from March 8-11.
