Mean Green Opens 2015-16 Conference Slate Against UTSA On New Year’s Day
DENTON - North Texas women’s basketball has released the Conference USA portion of its 2015-16 schedule, as announced by first-year head coach Jalie Mitchell and the C-USA office.
The 18-game slate features home-and-home matchups with regional foes Rice, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion and Charlotte. The Mean Green will take the court seven times against C-USA teams that played in the postseason last year.
North Texas opens conference action with two games at home. The first, a meeting with UTSA, will take place on Jan. 1 before UTEP visits the Super Pit on Jan. 3.
NT will then hit the road for three straight away games, the longest such streak of the Mean Green’s conference schedule. The season’s first road contest will come against Rice (Jan. 9) as the team looks to prove that last season’s five-point victory over the Owls wasn’t a fluke. North Texas will follow that meeting up with a game at Marshall (Jan. 14). The meeting will be just the second time in the team’s history that the Mean Green has visited the Thundering Herd. The road trip will end with a Jan. 16 date with WKU, the conference’s defending champions.
A 24-win Middle Tennessee team will visit the Super Pit for the first time as members of C-USA on Jan. 21. Matchups with UAB (Jan. 23) and Rice (Jan. 30) round out a string of January home games.
The month of February is highlighted by home games against Old Dominion (Feb. 11) and Southern Miss (Feb. 27). Last season the pair of teams finished with 21 and 25 wins, respectively. Also taking place in the year’s shortest month, the Mean Green will travel to Florida to take on FIU (Feb. 18) and Florida Atlantic (Feb. 20) for the team’s sole meeting with each of those teams in 2015-16. Last year, FIU was the only team that finished worse than North Texas in the league’s year-end standings, going 0-18 in conference play.
The regular season concludes with two games on the road. North Texas will visit Old Dominion on March 3 before arriving in Charlotte two days later on March 5.
Postseason action will return to Birmingham once again in 2016 as UAB will play host to the C-USA Tournament from March 8-12. For the first time, each of the conference’s 14 members will be invited to compete for the C-USA postseason crown.
NT is coming off one of the lowest win totals in the program’s history. Finishing 5-24 overall, all but one of the Mean Green’s wins last season came against conference opponents that traveled to Denton. Furthermore, eight of the team's C-USA games were decided by single digits, including five games of five points or less.
