DENTON -- The North Texas women's basketball program has been selected to play in the 2017 San Juan Shootout in San Juan, Puerto Rico over the Thanksgiving weekend.

It will be the first time the Mean Green have traveled outside the continental United States to play a game. They will play two games back-to-back on Friday, November 24, and Saturday, November 25, against the University of Detroit and Coastal Carolina. Both games will be played at the Mario Morales Coliseum.

"I'm a firm believer in making sure we give student-athletes a great experience and make memories in addition to winning games," said head coach Jalie Mitchell. "This is a fantastic opportunity for our women, some of whom have never left the 50 states, to get out and see something different and compete against two excellent programs."

The five-day trip will include Puerto Rico sightseeing to San Juan's historic Old Town and Castillo San Felipe del Morro, among other historic sites.

On the court, this will be North Texas' first meeting with Detroit and Coastal Carolina.

The Mean Green are entering their third season under Mitchell. North Texas has seen its record improve in each season and set program-highs. North Texas returns two starters including last season's leading scorer Terriell Bradley. They've also added three accomplished freshmen and junior college transfer point guard Brittany Smith to their roster. All four women will be eligible to play this coming season. After redshirting last season due to NCAA transfer rules, Baylor transfer Justis Szczepanski is also eligible and has three years of eligibility left.
