DENTON, Texas (5/13/09) The awards continue to pile up for the incoming freshman for the North Texas women’s basketball team as guard Raquel Cuffie was named to the Triad Area All-State team by North Carolina Preps.
Cuffie, one of just six players to be named to the All-State team, wrapped up her wildly successful high school career at Winston Salem Prep. This past season Cuffie eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for her high school career. Cuffie isn’t alone when it comes to post-season awards for incoming freshman for head coach Shanice Stephens.
Soon to be teammates Jasmine Godbolt and LaKevia Taylor were both named to the 2009 TABC Girls All-Star team. Godbolt and Taylor were both named to the 2008-09 TABC All-State squads as well.
The trio of players will join 6-4 post Brittany Thompson in making up part of the incoming players for the Mean Green. Thompson, who’s senior season was cut short by an injury, posted some of the best numbers in the state of Texas her junior season.
Thompson was a selected to the 2008 Super Centex First-Team after averaging 26 points and 22 rebounds a game. Her 26 points a game was the 8th best in the state of Texas in all classifications. Thompson’s 22 rebounds a game led the state of Texas regardless of classification. To go along with her point and rebounding total she averaged just over 9 blocks a game.
The four freshman, along with Brittney Hudson, Niqky Hughes, newly signed freshman Caitlin Hawkins and junior college transfers Chynna Burwell and Denetra Kellum will form the nucleus for Coach Stephens in her second season at North Texas.
