North Texas Women Add Dynamic Scorer In Adrianna Henderson
Newest Addition To Mean Green Roster Among Top Kansas Scorers
DENTON — North Texas women’s basketball coach Jalie Mitchell signed point guard and Topeka scoring champion Adrianna Henderson to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday.
At 5-foot-8, the four-year letterwinner was a scoring machine for Topeka High as she led the city in scoring in back-to-back seasons. She averaged 21.6 points per game in her senior year after dropping 22.1 points per outing as a junior, and she was the city’s only 20+ point scorer in each season.
Henderson completed a dominant four-year Topeka High career with 1,248 points.
“We are very fortunate that Adrianna was still available in the late signing period,” Mitchell said. “She is an extremely intelligent point guard who is on a mission every time she touches the floor. Academically, she will set the standard very high as she is focused on being an exceptional student. Athletically, she gives us another ball handler that can handle pressure and a passer that knows exactly how and when to deliver. She is also a major threat to score. I look forward to having an additional guard that our opponents will have to gameplan for.”
Honors and accolades aren’t new to Henderson. The four-time all-city honoree capped off her time at Topeka with two first-team selections. She added to that with First-Team All-Centennial League and Second-Team All-Class 6A honors. Lastly, she was a one-time Wendy’s Athlete of the Week selection after scoring 25 and 28 points in back-to-back games in February 2016.
The explosiveness of the Mean Green’s latest addition can’t be denied. In her final two seasons, Henderson tallied 20 or more points on 26 different occasions. Her career-high point total came during her junior year, when the Topeka star notched a 39-point outing on 15-of-21 from the field.
North Texas assistant coach Aisha Stewart led the way in recruiting the multi-talented guard out of Kansas. Stewart was a former standout at Highland Park High, located a short three miles from Henderson’s alma mater.
