DENTON, Texas. (4/17/09) The rebuilding of the North Texas women’s basketball team continued on Friday as the Mean Green signed two players to National Letters of Intent. North Texas head coach Shanice Stephens inked a prolific shooting guard in Caitlin Hawkins and one of the best post players in the junior college ranks in Chynna Burwell.
Burwell is a junior college transfer from Trinity Valley while Hawkins is from one of the most dominant high school programs in Colorado.
"Chynna is an outspoken, natural leader who will provide a dominant post presence in the paint. This agile and gifted athlete can score at will around the basket," said coach Shanice Stephens. "She will also be the much-needed defensive stopper in the post and her ability to run the floor is essential to our transition game. The fans will simply adore Chynna and the way she plays the game."
Burwell, who stands at 6-4, shot over 45 percent from the floor in her two seasons with Trinity Valley. She had 135 rebounds and 29 blocked shots in her time with the Cardinals. Burwell was a key player for the Cardinals as they won the Region XIV Conference title for the eighth straight year.
Hawkins was the shooting guard at Highlands Ranch High School in Colorado and averaged 8.3 points a game this past season. Her team captured three state championships in the last four seasons.
"Caitlin is a dynamic shooter who also is a terrific passer. She is a prototypical gym rat, who loves the game of basketball," Stephens said. "She hails from a winning program that has won three of the last four state championships and will definitely be a crowd pleaser as she transitions into our Mean Green brand of basketball."
Hawkins and Burwell will join transfers Niqky Hughes and Brittney Hudson along with newcomers Jasmine Godbolt, Raquel Cuffie, KeKe Taylor, and Brittney Thompson in the 2009-10 season for North Texas.
