#First44 Day 4: Out On the Golf Course
Mitchell Sees Familiar Faces at Don January
Mitchell was named head coach of the North Texas women's basketball team on April 9, 2015. Between moving back to Denton, getting to know the team and beginning to operate the Mean Green program, Mitchell will be very busy early on in her tenure. We want to give fans an in-depth look at her #First44 days on the job in the form of a 44-part series that will run from April 10-May 23.
When the pouring rain began Monday morning and the flash flood warnings came across the news tickers, a 1 p.m. shotgun start for the 2015 Don January Golf Classic did not look too promising. But the rain subsided and despite a 30-minute delay, the event went on as planned.
Jalie Mitchell is not the golfing type, so she came out to drive around Trophy Club Country Club and meet with the folks who support the North Texas athletic department. Only four days after being announced as women's basketball head coach, it was important for her to show the supporters her appreciation for everything they do to help the Mean Green be successful on and off the field.
"Although the rain threatened to shut down the party, I had an awesome time on the course today," she said. "North Texas is home to so many successful athletes and business people, and we are one big happy family."
She also got the chance to catch up with other North Texas Hall of Famers like Lance White and Patrick Cobbs, who was the starting running back for the Mean Green when Mitchell was still in school. Even though there will be about another year until the next Don January event, do not expect her to pick up the golf clubs any time soon; she is much more comfortable on the hardcourt than the fairways.
