DENTON, Texas - North Texas head women's basketball coach Shanice Stephens has been relieved of her duties following three seasons with the Mean Green.
"This has been a difficult decision but unfortunately the program has not shown the progress we expected at this point in the process," said Athletic Director Rick Villarreal. "We play in a very competitive conference and our women's basketball program has not made the necessary strides to close the gap between us and the elite teams in the league."
North Texas finished with a 5-25 record this year, which included a first-round loss in the Sun Belt Conference postseason tournament. In three seasons, Stephens compiled an overall record of 25-67, including a 13-39 Sun Belt Conference record.
"I am extremely grateful to former President Gretchen Bataille, current President Lane Rawlins and athletic director Rick Villarreal for giving me the opportunity to coach at North Texas," Stephens said. "My family and I are very appreciative of the support we have received from the North Texas athletic department and community. I wish the Mean Green family and my student-athletes much success in the future."
A national search for her replacement will begin immediately.
