Mean Green Open C-USA Championship Wednesday Against UAB

March 7, 2017

BIRMINGHAM, AL. -- It's win or go home time for the North Texas women's basketball team.

The team begins its postseason run Wednesday at the Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Alabama, against the host team UAB Blazers in the first round of the Conference USA Championship Presented by MetroPCS.

After a regular season that saw the Mean Green (11-18, 8-10 C-USA) finish with its best C-USA record ever, North Texas earned an eight seed-- its highest seeding in the conference's postseason tournament. Wednesday's game is at 12:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on Campus Insiders and on KNTU 88.1 FM and KNTU.com.

The Mean Green will take on the ninth-seeded Blazers (15-14, 8-10 C-USA). UAB enters the conference tournament on a two-game winning streak after they swept the Florida schools to end the regular season.

The Mean Green have recent success playing at UAB's Bartow Arena. North Texas beat the Blazers in Birmingham, Alabama, in the teams' only meeting this season, 59-58 in overtime on Jan. 5.

The North Texas defense is going to have to deal with one of the best 3-point shooting teams in conference. UAB's Rachael Childress was named the conference's freshman of the year on Monday. She leads C-USA freshmen in points (358), 3-pointers per game (3 per game) and 3-point field goal percentage (40 percent).

In their only meeting this season, North Texas took a commanding 15-point lead late in the third quarter. North Texas contained UAB to three made 3-pointers on 13 attempts. The Blazers average more than seven per game. Against North Texas, three of UAB's starters scored zero points, including Deanna Kuzmanic who led the team in 3-pointers last season while averaging 12 points per game.

In overtime, Mean Green senior Terra Ellison knocked down late free throws to seal the team's first road conference victory.

Last season, North Texas won its first C-USA tournament game in program history. A win over the ninth seeded Blazers would be the highest seeded opponent a North Texas team has beaten in a postseason conference tournament since the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
