North Texas Begins SBC Tourney At Home Tonight

DENTON, Tex. (3/5/08) Tournament time is here and the North Texas women’s basketball team looks to begin their run through the Sun Belt Conference Tournament tonight with a battle against the New Orleans Privateers at 5 p.m. from the Super Pit.

The Mean Green enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed while New Orleans is the No. 9 seed. The two teams face off for the second time in less than a week as just four days ago the Privateers beat the Mean Green by two points in New Orleans.

The winner advances to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament in Mobile and will face the top seed Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.

The Mean Green is hosting a first-round tournament game for the first time and it will be the first tournament game played at the Super Pit for North Texas since the hosting the tournament in 2005. North Texas is going after its first win in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament since the 2003 season.

The Mean Green’s last victory in the league tournament came against UALR in 2003. North Texas has history on its side as last season in the new tournament format all five teams that hosted a first-round game last season were victorious.

North Texas as a team has 771 field goals from the floor this season, which is 10th in school history. North Texas is averaging 25 field goals a game, which with at least one more game will climb them up the charts quickly.

If the Mean Green reach their average of 25 field goals against New Orleans, then they will move from 10th to 5th for field goals in a single season. The all-time record is 919, set in the 1985-86 season.

That’s not all in terms of single season records that the Mean Green will accomplish. Currently North Texas is in the top 10 for a single season in points with 1965. That ranks 8th all-time and the Mean Green have a chance to finish in the top 3 in that category before the season is over. If North Texas advances deep into the conference tournament, that record is well within reach. The record is 2,202 points set in during the 1985-86 season.
