JONESBORO, Ark. (3/4/09) Postseason play has arrived and the North Texas women’s basketball team faces Arkansas State in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Mean Green battle the Red Wolves at 7 p.m. from the Convocation Center and the game can be heard on 88.1 FM KNTU.
North Texas and Arkansas State will be meeting for the 23nd time in series history. The Red Wolves lead the series with the Mean Green 15-7. Arkansas State has won 10 of the past 11 matchups with the Mean Green. The only North Texas win during that stretch came in 2007, an 82-66 win at the Super Pit. Arkansas State has won both meetings this season against North Texas including the most recent game one week ago.
In Jonesboro the Mean Green has found success hard to come by with just a 1-8 record. The only North Texas win over the Red Wolves during that stretch came in 2001. This is the first time the two teams will have met in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament since the 2006 tournament in Murfreesboro. That year the Red Wolves knocked off the Mean Green 78-62.
North Texas enters the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as the No. 11 seed against Arkansas State. The Mean Green is 1-1 in opening round games since the league expanded to this format in 2006-07. The North Texas all-time record in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament is 5-7.
The Mean Green is looking to move beyond the first round and advance further. North Texas hasn’t been to the semifinals of the conference tournament since the 2002 season. That year the Mean Green played for the conference title.
The winner advances to Hot Springs and will face the Denver Pioneers on Saturday night at 9 p.m. in the SBC Quarterfinals.
