West Champs Too Tough For NT Women

LITTLE ROCK - The Sun Belt West Division Champion UALR women's basketball team held true to form on Tuesday night, topping North Texas, 59-46, in the regular season finale from the Jack Stephens Center.

North Texas (5-24, 2-14 Sun Belt) has now lost nine straight games to UALR (20-7, 14-2 Sun Belt), and 10 straight overall this season. The Mean Green will be the Sun Belt West Division's No. 6 seed for this weekend's conference tournament, and will face East No. 3 Western Kentucky at noon on Saturday at Summit Arena in Hot Springs, Ark.

Denetra Kellum (13 points), Kasondra Foreman and Jasmine Godbolt (11 points each)  led the Mean Green scoring efforts. Still, they were no match for UALR's Chastity Reed who led all scorers with 17 points. Reed and the UALR defense held NT under 50 points for its fourth straight game, and 19-of-48 (39.6 percent) shooting.

Kellum pushed the Mean Green out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a runner in the lane, and Ash'Lynne Evans made it 7-2 with a 3-pointer from the right wing just minutes into the contest.

Marian Kursh answered with a couple of layups for the Trojans that anchored a 7-2 run, giving UALR a 21-16 edge with 8:29 left in the first. That UALR streak would eventually reach 15-4, sending the Trojans into the break up, 29-20.

One of the nation's top defensive sides, UALR forced six steals in the first half against NT.
