Red Wolves Use Second Half To Rally Past North Texas

JONESBORO, Ark. (2/25/09) Arkansas State used an early second half run to pull away from the North Texas women’s basketball team 76-67 at the Convocation Center.  With the game tied at the half 33-33, the Red Wolves went on a 15-7 run to start the half and never looked back to pick up there fifth straight win.  

The loss puts North Texas (10-18, 6-11) on the road for the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament which starts March 4.

“This is a tough one to take because we were executing our game plan but then got away from everything in the second half and they made the plays when they had to and we didn’t” said coach Stephens.

After leading much the first half the Red Wolves got a buzzer beating shot from Brittney Hiles to end the half and tie the game at 33. Arkansas State (15-13, 9-8) carried that momentum over in the second half opening up a 48-40 lead with 15:23 let.

North Texas made a charge at Arkansas State late in the game. Trailing 61-53 with 7:51 left, Yari Escaler hit a 3-pointer and was fouled and had a chance to cut it to a three-point game. However she was assessed with a technical foul which Caroline Starr converted into two free throws and North Texas never got closer.

Amber Jackson had 17 points while Tricia Lee had 16 to lead the way for the Mean Green.

North Texas closes out the regular season with a battle at Denver on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.
