Mean Green Heads To Lafayette With A Sweep In Mind

LAFAYETTE, La. (2/27/08) The final week of the regular season is here for the North Texas women’s basketball team and they start it off with a visit to Louisiana-Lafayette tonight at 7 p.m. The Mean Green is looking to break its two-game losing streak and sweep the season series with the Ragin Cajuns.

While there is still a week until the regular season is over, a lot can be decided in the next few days that will affect where North Texas is going to be in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. One thing is certain, North Texas will host a first-round game on March 5 in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

The Mean Green can no longer win the West Division title, but they can still finish as high as the No. 6 seed in the overall tournament.

The Mean Green is in a three-way tie with Florida International and South Alabama for the No. 6 seed. Its simple, if North Texas wins its final two-game and FIU loses one of its final two games, the Mean Green is the No. 6 seed.

If NT splits, the scenario’s become a little more tricky depending upon what FIU and South Alabama do. If NT loses its final two games, the Mean Green will be either the No. 7 or No. 8 seed.

Erica Howard had her third career 20 point game against Arkansas State as she poured in 21 points. Howard has continued her late season surge and since moving into the starting lineup midway through the season she is averaging 12.5 points a game and hitting just under 50 percent of her shots. Against Arkansas State Howard also had a career-high three blocked shots against Arkansas State and she is now in the top 10 all-time at North Texas in that category.

The last time that North Texas had four players averaging double figures in scoring for a season was the 1994-95 season. That year Melody Crosby, LaFreda Deckard, Jaquita Deaton, and Delaine Taylor all averaged double figures. They combined to score 46.3 points a game that year. This season Amber Jackson, Brittney James, Jo Hall, and Erica Howard are combining to average 46.2 points a game.
