DENTON (2/27/03) -- After pulling to within one point with 28 seconds left, North Texas got out-scored 5-0 down the stretch by Louisiana-Lafayette and suffered a final 65-59 Sun Belt Conference loss to the Ragin' Cajuns at the Super Pit on Thursday night.
The win was the first conference road victory for Louisiana-Lafayette this season and dropped the Lady Eagles to 10-15 overall and 5-9 in the Sun Belt. UL Lafayette improved to 7-18 and 3-11.
It was a frustrating loss for North Texas, which opened up a 26-21 lead at halftime and widened the gap to 12 points early in the second half by scoring the first seven points of the period to lead by 33-21 at the 18:12 mark.
"This was probably the most frustrating loss for me," said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. "We had established some momentum and now we have taken a step backward. We can stay with the best teams in the conference, but then struggle against the lower tier teams in our conference. We have to address this before the conference tournament."
After NT posted it's largest lead in the game, the Ragin' Cajuns stormed back by going on a 13-2 run that whittled the margin to one point. Later in the period North Texas went up by four points only to see that lead evaporate and watch UL Lafayette take the lead for good at 51-50 with 4:07 left in the game.
With 1:59 remaining, a three-point play by Heather Trout tied the game at 56-56. But the Cajuns came back with a three-pointer by Bernette Tolston and led the rest of the way. A three-pointer by North Texas' Emily Britt with 0:28 on the clock got the Lady Eagles to within 60-59, but that turned out to be the last points North Texas would score.
Britt led the Lady Eagles with 21 points on seven-of-11 shooting, including connecting on four-of-five from three-point range. She also led North Texas in rebounding with six. Also in double figures for the Lady Eagles was Kim Blanton with 13 points.
The Lady Eagles will play their final home game of the season on Saturday when they host New Mexico State at 7:00 p.m. at the Super Pit.
