NEW ORLEANS, La. (2/26/05) The North Texas women’s basketball team closed out the regular season in style by defeating the New Orleans Privateers 61-42 at the Lakefront Arena.
With a Louisiana-Lafayette win, North Texas (14-13, 9-6) is now the second seed in the SBC West and will play Sunday, March 6 at 11 am. The Mean Green's opponent is to be determined.
“We really came out and got out to a big lead which was big,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “We came out and shot the ball really well and I think that this was really one of more complete games of the season”
The Mean Green raced out to an early 18-3 lead over the Privateers (2-25, 2-13) thanks in part to the junior guard Mian Williams.
New Orleans responded with a 9-0 run to cut the Mean Green led to 18-12 with left in the first half. North Texas ended the half with a 6-0 run and held a 24-12 lead heading into the break.
The second half saw North Texas methodically pull away from the Privateers. The Mean Green had its largest lead of the game at 59-35 with in the second half.
“I’m really proud of this group for the way that they finished up the season,” Slinker said. “With all that they have been through and for them to finish strong on the road really gives us a lot of confidence heading into the conference tournament”.
North Texas had four players score in double figures for the fifth time this season led by Williams who had 12 points. The trio of Erika Bobo, Kelsie Edwards, and Natalie Mireles added 11 points apiece. The 11 points for Mireles are a career-high.
North Texas returns home to host the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first time in school history starting March 4-8.
