Hot Mean Green Offense Rolls Into Chilly Charlotte
Dawkins and Company Ready for Second Crack at 49ers
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As an unusual snowstorm hits North Carolina, the North Texas women's basketball team prepares for a rematch with the Charlotte 49ers and the possibility of a three-game winning streak. The Mean Green and 49ers are set to tip off at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Halton Arena and North Texas will be looking for payback from a 67-58 loss to Charlotte earlier this season at the Super Pit.
On a bright note for North Texas, the team is probably playing its best basketball of the season. In back-to-back wins over the weekend against Florida Atlantic and FIU, the Mean Green offense woke up from a long slumber. The team scored a season-high 74 points on Thursday in a 19-point win, then shattered that number with 77 points in a 16-point win on Saturday. The two key players for North Texas were senior guard BreAnna Dawkins and junior forward Acheil Tac.
Dawkins averaged 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in the two wins, which included career-high marks of 24 points and 13 rebounds against Florida Atlantic for her first-career double-double. For her outstanding play, Dawkins earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors. Meanwhile, Tac recorded back-to-back double-doubles for the first time in her career, accumulating a total of 33 rebounds in the two wins, including a career-high 19 boards against FIU.
In the first matchup on January 15, guard Lefty Webster dropped an opponent season-high 25 points, including an 11-17 effort from the foul line. At 5-foot 8-inches tall, Webster is a matchup nightmare with her size and aggressive high-low style of play. The sophomore really does it all for the 49ers, as she averages 13.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
The Mean Green will also have to look out for junior forward Kira Gordon and senior guard Hillary Sigmon, who average 11.3 and 11.1 points per game, respectively. In the first meeting, those two were right around their season averages, as Sigmon scored 12 and Gordon had 10 of her own. On the North Texas side, senior forward Briesha Wynn had a team-high 14 points, while redshirt sophomore Eboniey Jeter scored 10 and Dawkins contributed 11 in a losing effort.
