Women's Basketball Comes Up Short Against ASU

DENTON (2/23/08) The North Texas women’s basketball team could not overcome a first half deficit as Arkansas State defeated the Mean Green, 80-70, on Saturday night in the Super Pit.


The Mean Green fell to 13-15 overall and 8-8 in the Sun Belt, while ASU improves to 17-11 and 12-5 in the conference. The Indians leave the series, 13-7.


The Mean Green shot 30 percent in the first half, making only nine field goals as ASU jumped out to a 38-27 halftime advantage. The Indians used a 16-12 run at the start of the second half to prevent the Mean Green from making a comeback.


North Texas cut the lead to eight points numerous times but was unable to get any closer. NT outscored ASU, 43-42, in the second half, shooting at a 45.5 percent clip.


Erica Howard led all scorers with 21 points, two points shy of a career high. She led four Mean Green players in double figures. Yari Escalera followed with 12 points and Amber Jackson and Jo Hall chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.


North Texas takes to the road for a meeting vs. Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday, Feb. 27.
