Something Has To Give
North Texas Faces Louisiana Tech
RUSTON, La. — Three full throttle trains headed for the same station cross paths this week in the Deep South.
The North Texas women’s basketball team, rolling on a five-game winning streak, travels to Louisiana Tech Thursday and then Southern Miss Saturday for its final road trip before the Conference USA Championship. The two teams standing in front of the Mean Green’s way of their first conference winning record in 11 years and a potential first round conference championship bye are two teams riding a combined nine-game winning streak.
Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss sit tied for third in the C-USA standings but are just two wins ahead of the Mean Green. With four games left on the schedule, North Texas has already clinched its ticket to the championship but could be positioned in the top four of the standings after these two road games.
The Mean Green (11-14, 8-6 C-USA) begin their trip on Thursday at Louisiana Tech (15-11, 10-5 C-USA) who has also won its last five games. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from the Thomas Assembly Center. The game will be aired live on KNTU 88.1 FM.
North Texas scored a season-low 16 first half points but made a 10-point second half comeback at Texas-San Antonio and won its third straight road game, fifth straight overall and third road overtime game of the season. The win at UTSA wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for a regulation buzzer beating 3-pointer by senior Candice Adams that tied the game and sent it into overtime. The win was North Texas’ 11th of the season and tied their win total from last season, including their 2016 C-USA Championship win.
Thursday’s opponent is one of the best rebounding teams in the conference. Louisiana Tech averages 40 rebounds per game. Defensively, the Lady Techsters are strictly a zone team. When the Mean Green last played Louisiana Tech, Candice Adams made a career-high six 3-pointers as she opened up the defense with her shooting. Louisiana Tech won the game in the final minutes after allowing a transition 3-pointer and the Lady Techsters made its final nine free throws.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT US
Also making a trip to Mississippi and Louisiana this week is the Rice Owls who like Southern Miss is on a four-game winning streak. The Owls have also punched their conference tournament ticket and are one game behind North Texas. Rice will play Southern Miss on Thursday and La Tech on Saturday.
