DENTON, Texas (2/21/09) In a defensive struggled UALR rallied to knock off North Texas 57-52 in overtime at the Super Pit. Despite the 14th double-double of the season from Amber Jackson the Trojans held the Mean Green to just 31 percent shooting in the second half and five points in overtime to pick up the win.
North Texas (10-17, 6-10) was held to just 21 points in the second half and overtime frame as the UALR defense forced 26 Mean Green turnovers. After taking a 31-27 lead at the break, North Texas extended its lead to 39-33 with 13 minutes remaining. UALR (22-5, 14-2) scored eight straight points to take its first lead since 13 seconds into the game at 41-39.
The Mean Green responded with five straight points to go ahead 44-41 following a lay-up by Jackson. With less than three minutes to play, UALR cut the lead to 44-43 with a basket by Chastity Reed. The Trojans retook the lead at 45-44 with two free throws by Kim Sitzmann.
A free throw by Kelli Buckley tied the game at 45-45 and then Anshel Cooper hit a baseline jumper with 58 seconds left to give UALR a 47-45 lead. Senior Jo Hall, who scored a game-high 17 points, tied the game at 47-47 with a lay-up. UALR had a chance to win the game in regulation but Cooper missed two jump shots.
In overtime UALR never trailed. Marian Kursh had the big basket with 1:10 left in overtime to give UALR a three point lead at 53-50. North Texas had one final chance to tie the game but Mansa El’s 3-pointer fell short and the Trojans hit two free throws with five seconds left to ice the game.
North Texas is back in action on the road Wednesday night at Arkansas State.
