Denver Drops North Texas 74-56

DENVER, Colo. (2/20/05) - The North Texas women’s basketball team could not keep up with Louisiana-Lafayette in the Sun Belt Conference West Division as the Denver Pioneers knocked off the Mean Green (12-13, 7-6) 74-56 at the Hamilton Gymnasium.


The loss drops North Texas to 7-6 in the Sun Belt Conference, one-game behind the Ragin Cajuns who sit atop the West Division at 8-5.


“This was a tough loss for us. They came out and were able to jump on us early and they were able to respond to every run that we made at them,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker.


Denver (6-19, 4-9) had five players score in double figures, led by seniors Tasha Jones and Sarah Cyran, who both scored 14 points.


With the game tied a 5-5 two minutes in, the Pioneers were able to break things open with a 12-0 run and led 17-5 with 13:07 remaining in the first half.  Denver maintained a 12-point lead into the break at 32-20.


North Texas made two second half runs, first trailing 44-29, the Mean Green went on a 10-2 run to trim the Pioneer led to 46-39 with 9:53 remaining.


Denver built its lead back up to 12 points at 51-39 when North Texas answered with an 8-2 run to get to within six points at 53-47 with 5:26 left.


Denver was able to pull away from North Texas with clutch free throw shooting and a 16-4 run to extend their lead to 69-51. The Pioneers were 26-31 from the free throw line and 8-20 from behind the 3-point line.


North Texas had four players score in double figures as freshman Erica Howard and sophomore Kelsie Edwards both had 12 points. 


The Mean Green will continue its three-game road trip on February, 24 with a visit to South Alabama.
