Late Free Throws Lift UNO Past Lady Eagles, 64-63

NEW ORLEANS, La. (2/20/03) -- Monique Taylor hit two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to power the New Orleans Privateers past the North Texas women's basketball team, 64-63, at Lakefront Arena on Thursday night.

The Lady Eagles had one last chance to win the game but Erika Bobo had her shot blocked with five seconds left, and Angel Lewis' shot at the buzzer came up short.

North Texas falls to 4-8 in Sun Belt Conference play and 9-14 overall. Junior forward Kim Blanton turned in her fourth double-double of the season as she had 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. The Lady Eagles opened up a seven-point lead midway through the first half at 23-16, before New Orleans went on a 12-1 run to make it 28-24 with 4:04 in left in the half. New Orleans held the lead at the half 32-31.

The Lady Eagles, keyed by the play of freshman Jamie Armstrong, surged ahead of the Privateers in the second half with a 10-4 run to open up a 56-50 lead with 7:15 remaining. Armstrong ended the night with 15 points, her second highest total of the season.

New Orleans was able to answer the North Texas run by connecting on two straight 3-point baskets to tie the game at 59. After the teams traded baskets, Blanton scored to give the Lady Eagles a 63-61 lead, but the Privateers ended the game with three straight free throws, including the game winner by Taylor.

North Texas closes out its road trip with a visit to South Alabama on Saturday at 7 p.m.
