DENTON, Texas- North Texas fell 50-47 to ULM on Saturday evening at the Super Pit. North Texas held ULM to an opponent season low of 23% field goal shooting. Denetra Kellum posted her fifth double-double of the season.
North Texas took control of the game starting at 4:36 of the first half, playing stifling defense that forced ULM to go 12:22 without a field goal. North Texas outscored ULM 15-4 over that time frame, as they forced ULM to miss 28 straight field goals. North Texas used that stretch to take a 10 point lead in a game that had seen nine lead changes in the first half.
The Mean Green scored seven unanswered points in the last 1:04 of the first half to take a 30-24 lead going into the break.With ULM trailing 47-45, Ash'Lynne Evans registered two key steals for the Mean Green.
Her first steal came at 1:09 left in the game, but the ensuing possession ended with a Tamara Torru offensive foul. On the trip back down the floor, she stole the ball with 42 seconds remaining and got fouled, but missed the front end of the one-and-one.
ULM's Priscilla Mbiandja made a layup for ULM with 23.1 seconds remaining to tie the game at 47, and missed the and-one free throw that would have given the Warhawks the lead at 47. After the Warhawks grabbed the ensuing rebound, Kassie Courtney sank one of two free throws with 16.2 remaining to give ULM a 48-47 lead that they would not relinquish.
North Texas fell to 5-21 on the season and 2-11 in Sun Belt play. ULM improves to 14-14 overall and 8-7 in league play.
Senior Denetra Kellum scored 19 points and posted 12 rebounds on her way to her sixth double-double of her career and fifth of 2010-11. She now has scored in double digits in 15 of her last 16 games.
Freshman Ash'Lynne Evans had a career-high 11 rebounds, marking her first double-digit rebounding game. She also tied her career high with three steals, two of which came in the last 1:04 of the game.
Junior Tamara Torru scored in double-digits for the eighth time this season, and had four of the points in North Texas' 7-0 run to close out the first half.
The Mean Green return to action on Thursday, February 23 as it takes on Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. The game will be broadcast on the radio on KNTU, 88.1 FM.
