DENTON, Tex. (2/16/08) The North Texas women’s basketball team looks to continue its surge on Saturday night as they host the Troy Trojans at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green is coming off a 13-point victory over Denver and has won five of its past six games at the Super Pit. The Mean Green is also locked in a battle in the West Division with five games remaining for seeding in the upcoming SBC Tournament.
The Mean Green is 2 1/2 games behind Arkansas State for the top spot in the West. Troy is coming off a 20-point loss at Western Kentucky. Troy has been struggling of late having lost eight of its past nine games.
North Texas had its best defensive effort against the Denver Pioneers on Thursday. The Mean Green defense limited the Pioneers to only 42 points, the fewest allowed this season. In fact it is the fewest points allowed by the Mean Green in 54 games, dating back to the 2005-06 season. Not since North Texas held South Alabama to 39 points on February 25, 2006 has the Mean Green’s defense allowed so few points.
Senior Talicia Sanders has been climbing up the ladder on the rebounding charts and blocked shots, but she also took her first charge of her career in the win over Denver.
Sanders is in elite company at North Texas as she, along with former great Clara Campbell are the only players in the Mean Green’s history to record at least 600 rebounds and 95 blocked shots for their career.
Amber Jackson returned back to scoring double figures after a brief hiatus of just two games with reaching double figures. Jackson has scored in double figures in 20 games this season, which is the most by a North Texas player in a single season since Jalie Mitchell had 27 games of double digit scoring in 2001-02.
Game time is set 5 p.m.
