DENTON (2/14/08) Amber Jackson scored 16 points to lead the women’s basketball team to a 55-42 victory against Denver on Thursday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green improves to 12-13 and 7-6 in the Sun Belt Conference, while the Pioneers fall to 9-15 and 4-9 in the Sun Belt. NT swept the series this season but trails in the series, 9-7.
The Mean Green total points are the fewest points it has scored this season in a win. The 45 points scored by Denver is tied for the lowest points that North Texas has held an opponent to.
Jackson was one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Brittney James joined her in double figures with 10 points.
North Texas used two runs, one in the first and one in the second, to extend its lead against Denver. After North Texas took a seven-point halftime lead, Denver cut the lead to two points, 35-33 midway through the second half. The Mean Green responded with a 14-2 run to take a commanding 49-35 advantage. Jackson and Talicia Sanders each scored six points in the run.
Denver was held to seven field goals in the second period. The Pioneers shot 30.2 percent from the field in the game. Nnenna Akotaobi scored 18 points for Denver, hitting six of DU’s 16 field goals in the game.
North Texas also used a run in the first half to get ahead of Denver. After DU tied the game at 11-11, Jo Hall started a 12-4 run that gave NT a 23-15 lead.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 when it faces Troy in the Super Pit at 7 pm.
