North Texas Falls To Middle Tennessee 64-55

MURFREESBORO , Tenn. (2/12/04)- The Middle Tennessee women’s basketball team used a late 16-6 run in the final five minutes of the game to defeat North Texas 64-55 in Sun Belt Conference action from the Murphy Center. The Blue Raiders erased an 11-point North Texas halftime lead to rally for the win.  

“We came out and had some turnovers in the second half and I don’t know if we lost our focus or not but we let them come out and take advantage of our mistakes,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker.  

The Mean Green opened the game with a 14-7 run to take a commanding lead six minutes into the game. The Blue Raiders trimmed the North Texas lead to 16-12 with 9:41 in the first half when the Mean Green answered with an 11-2 run over 3:41 to post their largest lead of the game at 27-14 with 6:10 to go in the first half.

Junior guard Jill Medlock keyed the run with two 3-pointers as she poured in 11 first half points and Mean Green held a 32-21 lead at the halftime break.  

Middle Tennessee opened the second half with a 10-2 run to trim the North Texas lead to 34-31. Two straight North Texas baskets pushed the lead back up to seven points at 38-31 when the Blue Raider guard Patrice Holmes scored seven straight points to tie the game up at 38-38. Holmes finished with a game-high 20 points, 16 coming in the second half.  

North Texas responded once again retaking a five-point at 48-43 with 7:02 remaining. Tia Stovall then scored five straight points for Middle Tennessee as they had the game tied up at 48-48 with 5:50 left. The Blue Raiders pulled away from North Texas in the final five minutes and iced the game at the free throw line connected on six straight.  

North Texas had three players score in double figures led by Medlock with 13 points. She hit three 3-pointers in the game and that moved her into fifth place on the all-time single season list with 48 this year.  

The Mean Green returns home to face Western Kentucky on February 14, which will begin a five-game homestand for North Texas to close out the season.
