NEW ORLEANS, La. (2/11/09) A suffocating defense fueled the North Texas women’s basketball team to a 62-52 win over New Orleans at Lakefront Arena. The Mean Green (9-15, 5-8), who never trailed in the game, held the Privateers to just 29 percent shooting for the game and had three players in double figures for their second straight win in league play.
“It was a great defensive effort out there tonight and it was fun to see our defense execute everything we talked about,” said Shanice Stephens. “This is the kind of effort that we need to get for 40 minutes and it was one of our best of the year”
From the opening tap the Mean Green took an early lead and never looked back. A 10-2 run to start the game put the Mean Green up eight six minutes into the game. After making their first shot of the game, New Orleans (12-13, 7-7) would miss 14 straight thanks in part to the Mean Green defense.
The Privateers battled back to cut the lead down to two at 16-14 with seven minutes left in the half. North Texas took a four-point at the break 30-26.
The second half saw the Mean Green grow their lead to double figures early in the second half. Brittney James, who had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, had six points down the stretch in the final five minutes to help North Texas put the game away.
The 29 percent shooting for New Orleans was the second lowest field goal percentage for a North Texas opponent this season.
Jo Hall added double figures with 14 points and Amber Jackson finished with 12 points. North Texas has won back-to-back league games for the first time this season.
The Mean Green is back in action on Sunday afternoon at Middle Tennessee at 1 p.m.
