LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (2/9/08) It’s a showdown between two of the hottest teams in the Sun Belt Conference this afternoon as the North Texas women’s basketball team visit UALR at 4:30 p.m. The Mean Green is coming off its upset win over Western Kentucky on Wednesday night and has won five of its past seven games.
Meanwhile UALR is winners in seven of its past eight games and knocked off Middle Tennessee on the road on Wednesday night.
North Texas is 6-5 in SBC play and two games behind UALR, who leads the West Division at 8-3.
The North Texas victory over Western Kentucky ended the nation’s fourth longest winning streak at 12 games. The Mean Green’s victory was also a milestone in terms of a victory over a teams ranked in the top 30 in the RPI. Since the RPI has been kept in women’s basketball starting in the 1999-00 season, North Texas had never beaten a team ranked in the top 35 in the RPI until beating Western Kentucky.
The Lady Toppers came in the game with an RPI of 33. Western Kentucky was also receiving votes in both the AP Top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Western Kentucky was 35th in the coaches poll and 40th in the AP Poll.
North Texas won for the third time this season when trailing at the half against Western Kentucky. The 12-point comeback at the half was the biggest rally at the break by the Mean Green since coming back from a 14-point deficit at the half to South Alabama on January 27, 2005.
North Texas is in the middle of its second big run of victories this season, having won five of its past seven games for the second time this year.
The Mean Green hasn’t had a run like that since the 2005-06 season. North Texas has not won five of seven games twice in a season since the 2005-06 year. That feat has only happened twice since the 2001-02 season, during the 2005-06 year and the current 2007-08 season.
