DENTON (2/4/06) The North Texas women’s basketball team held New Orleans to 18 points in the second half as the Mean Green went on to defeat the Privateers, 71-48, on Saturday night in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (16-6, 6-4) swept the series against New Orleans (2-20, 0-10) and now leads the series, 10-5.
North Texas held a three-point lead at the half, 33-30, but opened the second period by scoring 11 unanswered points. Senior Natalie Mireles scored six points in the run and junior Mia Ajekwu scored the remaining five.
Ajekwu led the team with 15 points. She has led the team in scoring the last two games and has scored in double figures nine times this season. Mireles finished with 12 points, including three three-pointers. Erica Howard was the third Mean Green player with points in double figures with 12.
The Mean Green outscored the Privateers in the second half, 38-18, leading by as many as 26 points. NT held UNO to 5-of-28 shooting in the second half.
Mireles gave North Texas a 12-point advantage in the first half with a three-pointer, 28-16, but New Orleans responded by scoring 14 of the final 19 points in the first period to close the gap to three points.
North Texas recognized its four seniors: Erika Bobo, Natalie Mireles, Mian Williams and Kennethia Wilson. Bobo was held to two points in the game, Williams chipped in eight and Wilson connected on two free throws.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8 when it faces Middle Tennessee at 7 pm in the Super Pit.
