BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (2/3/07) Crystal Kelly, second in the nation in scoring, poured in 19 points to power the Lady Toppers (16-5, 10-2) past the North Texas (6-15, 3-8) women’s basketball team 82-68 at E.A. Diddle Arena.
“They came out and put us in a hole quickly and we just couldn’t get out from it,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “We played hard in the second half and I was pleased with the effort of Erica Howard but you have to give them credit, there inside game is one of the best”
With the game tied at 2-2, Western Kentucky went on a 17-3 run to open up a 19-5 lead with 10 minutes to play in the first half. The Lady Toppers slowly expanded its lead and capped off an 11-2 run with a 3-point play by Dominique Duck to make it 39-14.
The second half saw the Mean Green slice the Lady Toppers lead to 12 on two separate occasions, but Western Kentucky never had its lead trimmed to single digits.
Erica Howard tied her season high with 19 points off the bench and Amber Jackson reached double figures for the fifth straight game with 12 points.
North Texas outscored the Western Kentucky bench 42-20, but the inside game of Kelly was too much. She ended with 19 points, nine rebounds and was 9-for-10 from the floor.
North Texas is back in action on Wednesday, February 7 when they host New Orleans at the Super Pit.
