DENTON (2/2/08) Erica Howard tied a career high with 23 points, but the North Texas women’s basketball team came up short, falling to FIU, 77-70, on Saturday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green falls to 10-12 and 5-5 in the Sun Belt Conference, while the Golden Panthers improve to 9-13 and 5-6 in the conference.
The Mean Green never trailed in the first half, leading by as many as eight points, before settling for a 38-32 halftime score. FIU opened the second half with an 11-3 run to take its first lead of the game, 43-41, with 14:54 left in the game. North Texas held its final lead, 64-63, at 3:22 before being outscored 14-6 in the final minutes. NT made only one field goal in the final three minutes of the game, going 1-for-7.
Howard led all scorers with 23 points. She also tied a season high with nine rebounds. She was 6-for-9 from the field and 11-for-14 from the free-throw line. Amber Jackson and Yari Escalera joined Howard in double figures with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
North Texas shot 40 percent from the field, but was only 10-for-31 from the field and 1-for-9 from three-point range in the second half.
Fanni Hutlassa came off the bench to score 20 points for FIU. She went 3-for-8 from three-point range, hitting half of FIU’s three-pointers. She hit a three-pointer that gave the Golden Panthers the lead for good, 66-64, at 2:58.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 6 when it faces Western Kentucky at 7 pm.
