BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (1/31/09) The North Texas women’s basketball team opens the second half of the Sun Belt Conference season on the road against Western Kentucky today. The game will be televised as part of the Sun Belt Conference’s package with Comcast Sports Southeast and can be heard on 88.1 FM KNTU at 12 p.m.
North Texas and Western Kentucky will meet for the 13th time in series history. Western Kentucky leads the series 7-5 against the Mean Green. The Hilltoppers knocked off the Mean Green last season in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament last season 61-53 on their way to the conference title.
Western Kentucky is a perfect 5-0 against North Texas at home including a win over the Mean Green in the 2003 SBC Tournament.
Amber Jackson continues to reach new heights as she broke her career-high in points with 30 against Troy. Its the first time that Jackson has ever scored 30 points in a game for her career and the. Jackson and Brittney James have both topped the 30-point mark this season, marking the first time since the 2001-02 season that two players have scored more than 30 points in a game.
Jackson and James have had three games of 30 points or more over the last two years. Prior to last season, the Mean Green went four seasons without a player scoring 30 points in a game.
Amber Jackson’s night against Troy was record setting for a number of reasons, but she also connected on 13 field goals in the game. It’s the most field goals in a single game by a player since current assistant coach Jalie Johnson (Mitchell) had 14 field goals on February 7, 2002. Jackson is also on pace to enter the top 10 for most points in a single season in school history.
The record is 611 set by Clara Campbell in the 1985-86 season. She is on pace for 524 points, which would be the fifth most in school history and the most since Johnson and the 2001-02 season.
