DENTON (1/31/07) The North Texas women’s basketball team used a 15-2 run late in the game to hold off Troy and take a 68-53 victory on Wednesday night in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (6-14, 3-7) extends its series lead against Troy (11-11, 4-8) to 5-0 and snaps a two-game losing streak with the victory.
Troy taking a lead proved to be a good thing for the Mean Green. An Amy Lewis jumper that gave the Trojans its first lead in the game ignited a 15-2 run by the Mean Green with six minutes left on the clock. Lewis led all scorers with 22 points.
Three players led the Mean Green in double figures. Sanetra Jackson scored 14 points in 14 minutes of action, including 10 in the last six minutes. The sophomore scored eight points in the 15-2 run and hit two free throws in the final minute.
Tricia Lee recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The 10 rebounds was a career high. Amber Jackson also posted a career high in rebounds with 14 to go along with her nine points. She has tied a career high with seven assists. Talicia Sanders was the third player scoring in double figures with 12 points.
Lee’s three-pointer not only gave the North Texas the lead back at 49-47 with 6:57 left in the game. It also started a 15-2 run. The sophomore hit a second three-pointer in the run to put NT’s lead in double digits. She went 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Her final three came with 10 seconds on the clock and gave North Texas its largest lead of the game at 15.
North Texas led throughout the first half, holding Troy to 29.4 percent shooting from the field. Troy cut the lead to one midway through the first half , 21-20, but NT responded with a 10-2 run to stay ahead.
Troy opened the second half with a three-pointer from the top of the key to cut the Mean Green lead to two, 32-30. After Amanda Quattrocchi missed a three-pointer, the Trojans came down the court and tied the game, 32-32, with a layup.
The Mean Green continued to stay one or two baskets ahead of the Trojans until the Lewis basket started a NT offensive.
North Texas held the edge in rebounds, 55-40.
The Mean Green returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Western Kentucky.
