UL Lafayette Hands NT Heartbreaking 58-57 Defeat

LAFAYETTE, LA. (1/30/03) -- The North Texas women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Louisiana-Lafayette, 58-57, in Sun Belt Conference action at the Earl K. Long Dome. 

With North Texas (8-10, 3-4) leading 57-54 and just 2.7 seconds remaining, the Ragin' Cajuns' Anna Petrakova hit a three-point basket and was fouled by Vilma Grismanauskaite. Petrakova made the free throw and the Ragin' Cajuns (4-13, 1-6) held on for the victory to break their 17-game Sun Belt Conference losing streak.

The game see-sawed back and forth throughout with the Lady Eagles building their largest lead at 22-15 with 8:30 to go in the first half. Louisiana-Lafayette battled back to take a one-point lead into the break at 29-28. The Ragin' Cajuns held onto the lead until Grismanausakite gave the Lady Eagles a 46-45 lead with 9:30 to play in the game.

Louisiana-Lafayette regained the lead with 2:30 remaining at 53-52 until the Lady Eagles' Emily Britt answered back with a basket to make it 54-53 with 1:58 left. Britt extended the North Texas lead to 57-54 with two free throws with 17 seconds left.

Kim Blanton lead the Lady Eagles with 17 points. Grismanauskaite recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

North Texas continues its road trip on Saturday with a visit to Las Cruces to battle New Mexico State in Sun Belt Conference action.
