C-USA's Top Defense Faces Its Best Offense Friday
North Texas Hosts WKU On Friday At 7 PM
DENTON — The North Texas women’s basketball team is back in the friendly confines of the Super Pit for two weekend conference home games.
The Mean Green (11-7, 2-4 C-USA) host defending Conference USA regular season and tournament champion Western Kentucky (14-5, 5-1 C-USA) on Friday and UTEP (12-6, 3-2 C-USA) on Sunday, which will also be alumni day for the Mean Green.
The Lady Toppers of Western Kentucky currently stand in first-place of the C-USA standings while the Miners of UTEP are in a tie for third.
WKU has been a staple atop the C-USA standings since they joined the conference for the 2014-15 season.
“They’re going to try and put you to sleep with the dribble-drive and all their players one through five can shoot the three,” said head coach Jalie Mitchell. “Our post players are definitely going to have to extend out to guard the three.”
Friday’s matchup will be a contest between the conference’s top defense and best offense. The Lady Toppers rank third in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 35 percent and first in scoring offense, averaging 76.6 points per game.
The Mean Green’s scoring defense ranks third in the country.
Friday will also be a game between the conference’s top turnover margin teams. North Texas forces the most turnovers per game (18.7) while WKU gives up the fewest turnovers per game (11.0).
“I’m very excited for this challenge,” Mitchell said. “They also did knock us out of the conference tournament last year and I always love a good bounce back game so this is a great opportunity for us.”
Mitchell added that she was excited to be back home and to be facing the Lady Toppers at home as the Super Pit has been a place where the team has seen a lot of success this year.
The Mean Green are undefeated at home in conference play and 8-2 overall, with both losses being by just one point each.
Additionally, North Texas is averaging six more points per game at home opposed to on the road and are giving up almost 20 fewer points in the Super Pit.
“It’s been a great season in the Pit and we expect to continue that,” Mitchell said.
Tickets to Friday and Sunday's games can be purchased at the Super Pit on game days or by visiting the North Texas Ticket Website.
