DENTON (1/22/04)- The North Texas women’s basketball team extended their winning streak to a season long three games with a 63-41 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock at the Super Pit. The Mean Green held the Trojans to a season-low 41 points en route to their third straight Sun Belt Conference win. The Mean Green has now won three straight games for the first time since the start of the 2003 season and three straight conference games since the 2001-02 season.
“It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it. I told the kids at half time that we were only shooting 25 percent, but the good thing about it, Arkansas Little Rock was only shooting 15 percent. Our defense was key factor for us tonight. Erica Bobo is one of the better defender in our conference. I thought she did an excellent job of frustrating Morris (Heather), their point guard. Mian Williams, Jamie Armstrong and Mia Ajekwu also played very good defense for us tonight,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “We executed much better tonight in the second half. I was happy to see Jamie Armstrong get her offense going in the second half”.
Armstrong led North Texas with a game-high 16 points and senior forward Kim Blanton chipped in double figures with 10 points. The Mean Green frustrated the Trojans from the onset of the game with stifling defense. North Texas held the Trojans to only 14 first-half points and four first half field goals as they took a 25-14 lead into the break.
North Texas opened the second half with 14-6 run to make it 39-20 with 14:04 remaining. Arkansas-Little Rock never got any closer than 11 points in the second half before North Texas pulled away for their largest margin of victory on the season.
North Texas is now tied for first place in the Sun Belt Conference West Division and will go for its fourth straight win against Arkansas State on Saturday night.
