DENTON (1/20/07) The North Texas women’s basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak with an 80-72 victory against Florida Atlantic on Saturday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (5-12, 2-5) takes a 1-0 lead in the series against Florida Atlantic (4-17, 0-9), who is in its first year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
North Texas shot 47.3 percent in the game, hitting 26-of-55 field goals, and held the Owls to 35.7 percent shooting from the field. The Owls scored 29 points off NT’s 30 turnovers.
After scoring four points in the first half, Sanetra Jackson warmed up in the second stanza. She scoring five of NT’s first seven points at the start of the second half to extend the Mean Green’s lead to 13, 47-34. The sophomore finished the game with 16 points.
The Mean Green maintained its lead throughout the second half, but the Owls cut the lead to three, 64-61, with 3:01 left in the game. The Mean Green hit 13 free throws in the remaining minutes to seal the win. North Texas shot 82.8 (24 of 29) from the charity stripe.
North Texas used an 18-0 run midway through the first half to take a 26-8 lead against the Owls. Amber Jackson led the Mean Green in the first half with 10 points, scoring eight of NT’s first 10 points. Amanda Quattrocchi scored eight points in the 18-0 run, including two three-pointers. Amber Jackson led the team with a career-high 17 points.
The Owls cut the Mean Green lead to one, 34-33, with a 14-1 run at the end of the first half. Talicia Sanders hit two jumpers in the last two minutes of the game to keep the Mean Green ahead by seven at the half.
The game featured a combined 53 turnovers between the two teams. North Texas forced 23 FAU turnovers but was guilty of allowing a season-high 30 turnovers of its own.
Sanders and Quattrocchi joined Amber and Sanetra Jackson in double figures with 10 points each.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24 when it hosts Middle Tennessee at 7 pm.
