Strong Defensive Effort Propels Mean Green Past UALR 60-43

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (1/19/06) The  North Texas women’s basketball team snapped a two-game skid and remained perfect in Sun Belt Conference road games, defeating Arkansas-Little Rock 60-43 Thursday night at the Jack Stephens Center.


The Mean Green is now 3-0 in league road games, while it also improved to 3-2 in Sun Belt action and 13-4 overall.  North Texas also notched its fourth consecutive road victory, just one shy of the school record set during the 1985-86 season.


The Trojans are now 9-8 and fell to 1-3 in conference outings.  North Texas leads the all-time series 9-1.


The Mean Green never trailed and used a strong defensive effort to power past UALR, holding the Trojans to a .300 field-goal percentage and just 43 points.  UALR is the third team that NT has held under 50 points this year.


Mia Ajekwu scored in double figures for the third time in the last four games, finishing with a team-high 12 points in 11 minutes of action.  Ajekwu was followed in scoring by DiDi Wali and Amber Jackson who both had 10 points.


North Texas went on a 13-2 run to begin the second half to grab a 36-21 advantage and while UALR was able to cut the Mean Green’s lead to nine points with 11:03 to go, couldn’t get any closer.  The Mean Green held the Trojans scoreless for the first 5:05 of the second half.


North Texas held UALR to a .318 field goal percentage and just 19 points in the first half as it took a 23-19 lead into halftime.  The Mean Green took a 16-6 lead, its largest of the first half, with 7:21 remaining in the first half, but the Trojans went on a 13-7 run to finish the half down by just four points.


North Texas will wrap up a two-game road swing Saturday when they play Arkansas State at 7 p.m.
