North Texas ended its five-game losing streak with a 76-69 win over FIU and was able to notch its first league win of the year thanks in part to a magnificent performance from senior Denetra Kellum
Kellum turned in perhaps the best final minute of play by a North Texas player at the free throw line ever against FIU. Kellum set a school record for her night from the line, going 14-for-14, which is the best-ever without missing a free throw in school history.
The 14 free throws were tied for the 4th most in school history. In the final 56 seconds of the game, Kellum went a perfect 10-for-10 from the line. She ended the night with 29 points, one shy of her career-high, but she did grab a career-best 14 rebounds to notch her fourth career double-double and the third of the season.
North Texas shot a season-best 50 percent from the floor against FIU. It was the highest shooting night in a game for North Texas Feb. 24 of last year when they shot 53.1 percent against Louisiana-Lafayette.
North Texas shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half, the best half of shooting since January 6, 2010 when the Mean Green hit 60 percent also against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Not only did North Texas notch its first Sun Belt Conference win of the season over FIU, it was also the first win in the new year of 2011. The Mean Green is now going after its first winning streak of the season and its first road win.
North Texas is 0-10 on the road this season and 0-12 away from the Super Pit. It is the worst road record for North Texas through 10 games since the 1984-85 season.
