DENTON, Texas - North Texas head women's basketball coach Shanice Stephens has announced that Larry McNeil will join the Mean Green coaching staff. McNeil brings a wealth of experience to North Texas and has been one of the best recruiters in the nation.
McNeil has over 15 years of collegiate coaching experience. He began coaching as an assistant at Northeastern Illinois in 1994. From there he moved to Talladega College as the head coach. At Talladega College his teams compiled 63 wins in his time in leading the school to its first back-to-back winning seasons in 20 years.
He spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois-Chicago from 1999-01. In his time McNeil helped put together the 19th and 20th ranked recruiting classes in the nation in back-to-back seasons.
McNeil spent seven seasons at Jackson State starting in 2001 and was part of back-to-back SWAC Conference Champions. The Tigers won the SWAC titles in 2002-03 and 03-04 with consecutive 23-win seasons. During his time he coached Amie Williams who was the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons and a first-team all-conference player.
The Tigers won four regular season conference titles and appeared in the WNIT three times.
He has spent the last two years as an assistant director of compliance at Jackson State.
McNeil was a member of the United States Army Reserve from 1989-92 and was promoted to Staff Sergant during Desert Storm.
