DENTON (1/12/08) Six players in double figures led the North Texas women’s basketball team to a 77-58 victory on Saturday night in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (7-10, 2-3) snaps a three-game losing streak with the win, while the Ragin’ Cajuns fall to 5-11 and 1-4 in the Sun Belt. ULL leads the series, 12-11.
All five starters scored in double figures and Talicia Sanders came off the bench to contribute 10 points and nine rebounds. Amber Jackson led the Mean Green with 16 points, her fifth straight game in double figures. Erica Howard posted 15, and Jo Hall and Yari Escalera chipped in 10 points each. Escalera tied a career high with the 10 points. Brittney James was one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
North Texas started the second half on a 15-6 run and never looked back. The Mean Green extended its lead to as many as 24 points, 75-51, with 3:01 left in the game. After NT’s big run, the Ragin’ Cajuns cut the lead to seven, 50-43, before the Mean Green scored 11 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.
There were 12 lead changes in the first half with neither team leading by more then six points. The Ragin’ Cajuns took a 10-4 lead early on, but North Texas scored seven unanswered points to take its third lead of the game. North Texas scored the last six points of the first half to take a 33-31 lead at the break.
The Mean Green shot 44.8 percent in the game and made 15-of-30 shots in the second half. NT went scoreless from three-point range, but posted 17 points from the free throw line. North Texas forced 22 ULL turnovers and held the visitors to 33.8 percent shooting from the field.
North Texas returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 17 at home against New Orleans at 5 pm.
