DENTON (1/8/05) - Mian Williams and Mia Ajekwu both scored in double figures to lead the North Texas women’s basketball team to a 63-55 win against New Mexico State in opening Sun Belt conference action on Saturday night in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (6-7, 1-0 Sun Belt) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and extended its series advantage against the Aggies, 10-8. North Texas improved its record to 4-1 in Sun Belt Conference openers.
Williams scored a career-high 18 points. The junior guard hit 3-of-4 three-pointers in North Texas’ opening 21-6 run at the start of the game. Ajekwu followed with 17 points and was 3-for-3 from three-point range. Prior to tonight’s game, the sophomore was 3-of-5 from behind the arc this season. The Mean Green tied a season high with 8 three-pointers in the game.
Behind 57.1 percent shooting from the field, North Texas jumped out to an early 21-6 advantage with 11:57 left in the first half. After an Ajekwu three-pointer, the Mean Green pulled out to a 19-point lead, 29-10, before settling for a 33-19 advantage at the half.
New Mexico State used a 27-13 run at the start of the second half to cut NT’s lead to five, 51-46, with 1:41 left in the game. The Aggies’ Monique Bribiescas scored 7-of-her-12 points in the spread. The Mean Green made 10-of-their-final-12 free throws to hold on to the victory.
Erika Bobo joined Ajekwu and Williams in double figures with 11 points. She has now scored in double figures in 11-of-13 games.
North Texas returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 13 against Denver at 7 pm in the Super Pit.
