DENTON, Tex. (1/7/08) It’s the Sun Belt Conference home opener for the North Texas women’s basketball team tonight as they face a key matchup with Louisian-Monroe at 5 p.m. from the Super Pit. The Mean Green is 1-1 to begin Sun Belt Conference play while the Warhawks are 2-0 in the early going.
North Texas is coming off a 73-62 loss to Troy last Thursday but is looking to bounce back with its first Sun Belt conference home game.
After going her longest stretch without scoring in double figures, just two games, Amber Jackson was right back to her leading role with 16 points again Troy. She continues to shoot the ball well as she is at 52.5 percent for the year.
That is on pace to be the 7th best shooting season in North Texas history and the best shooting season by a Mean Green player since the 1995-96 season. While she sits in 7th place, Jackson could move up the charts quite easily as she is less just percentage points behind the top three.
Senior Erica Howard is no stranger to the starting lineup in her career but made her first start of the season against Troy and responded with one of her best games of the year. Howard score 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds and has been one of the best players for North Texas in the last three games. Over the last three contests Howard is averaging 13.3 points and 6.7 rebounds a game and hitting over 57 percent of her shots from the floor.
North Texas is back at the Super Pit for its Sun Belt Conference opener against Louisiana-Monroe. The Mean Green is 5-2 in its previous seven league home openers but has lost its last two. Since the 2001-02 season at the Super Pit the Mean Green is 29-17 against Sun Belt Conference teams.
