Women's Basketball Controls Glass But Comes Up Short

JONESBORO, Ark. (1/06/07) The Mean Green women’s basketball team dominated the boards but couldn’t hold off Arkansas State, falling to the Lady Indians 57-51 at the Convocation Center.

Led by post Erica Howard, North Texas (4-9, 1-2) controlled the rebounding battle. The Mean Green hauled in a season-high 56 rebounds and held Arkansas State (11-4, 5-0) to just 39. The offensive boards were just as lopsided, with NT holding a 26-13 advantage. Howard, a junior, had a game-high 10 rebounds.

“I felt like we did a lot of things right tonight, especially on the boards” said head coach Tina Slinker. “Our post players really played well, but Arkansas State was able to get the stops down the stretch.”

The Mean Green caught the Lady Indians napping out of the gate and jumped out to an early 5-1 lead on the strength of its inside game. The Mean Green controlled the lane all night, piling up a 34-26 edge in points in the paint.

Despite trailing by 29-23 at the break, the Mean Green got back into the game immediate, trimming the lead to one within the half’s opening minutes.

Brittney James was impressive off the bench once again. The freshman poured in a team-high 13 points in 31 minutes of action, including a highlight-worthy assist to Amber Jackson in the second half.

The Mean Green returns home from its nine-game road swing on Tuesday against Denver. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from The Super Pit.
