Holmes Earns Second Freshman Of The Week Honor
Establishing Herself As One Of C-USA's Top Freshmen
IRVING -- After recording her second double-double of the year, the North Texas women's basketball team's Lauren Holmes was named Conference USA's Freshman of the Week on Tuesday for the second time this year.
In Saturday's 63-41 win versus Oklahoma Panhandle State University, Holmes scored a game-high 19 points on eight made field goals and grabbed a Mean Green season-high 13 rebounds, eight of which were offensive rebounds.
"It's a tremendous honor," Holmes said. "Being recognized for my hard work means a lot. But anything I can do to help the team is why I work hard."
After a slow start by North Texas versus OPSU, Holmes led UNT's defense that held the Aggies to just 12 second half points with steals and blocks.
Holmes finished with five steals and two blocks. She also had no turnovers in the game.
Holmes has played in 11 of the Mean Green's 12 games this year and is second on the team in scoring and rebounding. She's averaging 11.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
Her 2.7 steals per game ranks second in conference.
Of all C-USA freshmen, the 5-foot-9 guard ranks near the top in every statistical category, including second in rebounds and scoring. She only trails Old Dominion's freshman Victoria Morris by 0.3 of a point per game in scoring.
Holmes won her first C-USA Freshman of the Week honor on Dec. 11 after she scored 17 points at home versus La Salle and 11 on the road at Indiana. She also had eight steals in the two games and guarded the Hoosier's all-American and held her to just eight points in the second half as the Mean Green stormed back.
North Texas begins conference play on Wednesday at Louisiana Tech at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on CUSA.tv. Mean Green Radio Network's John Liddle will provide radio play-by-play on KNTU 88.1.
